The 4th Shanghai Joint Secondary School Mathematical Modeling Activity
The capability of mathematical modeling, especially the mindsets involved, is essential for an individual to meet the needs of the society and to have an edge in various occupations. In the latest national curriculum standards, requirements for modeling abilities and thinking skills are mentioned in 6 subjects, meaning that mathematical modeling is becoming the core quality in secondary education as a whole. Educators have been met with the complex problem of improving the mathematical modeling skills of all students. We should endeavor to explore how to evolve mathematical modeling contests for partial students into activities for all. This activity, supported by the only winner in the discipline of mathematical modeling of the National Basic Education Achievement Award – Shanghai Experimental School, is a beneficial experiment of the concept above. It is hoped that this activity can provide insights for the effective cultivation of mathematical modeling skills on a larger scale.

3.1 Signing up
w A team may consist of up to four students and one or two advisors.
w Simultaneously send participant information to the official email: email@example.com.
3.2 Problem proposal
w Submit to the official email a problem close to real life and suitable for high school students. You can:
1. Propose a complete problem like those in mathematical modeling contests.
3.3 Problem selection and matching
w The organizers will complement the problems received. Together with the problems provided by the preparatory committee, organizers will choose about 6 problems as the scope for this activity. Problems designated by the process above will be posted on the main webpage of the activity for the selection of participants.
3.4 Resolution of the problem and the writing of a paper
The organizers will give instructions to participants in the following topics according to the progress of the activity:
w How to read and comprehend a problem
w How to set up a main frame and propose reasonable assumptions for problem solving
w How to construct elementary models and algorithms
w How to write a qualified paper
w How to write a qualified summary
Submission of the paper
w The paper should be uploaded to the website of Shanghai United Mathematical Modeling Activity of Partial High Schools. The names of the students, advisor, or institution should NOT appear on any page of the electronic solution. Your team's summary should be included as the first page of your file.
w Simultaneously send it to the official email: firstname.lastname@example.org.
3.5 Poster design and presentation preparation
w Each team participating in the activity can create a poster introducing their work. We welcome students to take their work to the scene and participate in the activity.
w Teams qualified for on-site activities (poster demonstration and oral presentation) will be announced before 5.23.
w Teams listed in the top 60s are all invited to show their posters. Students and teachers taking part in the activity will vote for their projects.
w Teams in the top 20s will be able to deliver an oral presentation. Instructions for the presentation will be sent to their emails.
3.6 On-site presentation and discussion

w Professional judges will be invited to assess the performance of the teams.
w All who participate in the on-site activity can enter the scene of oral presentations to experience the interaction of judges with accomplished teams.
4 Educational discussion and exchange
The organizers will hold a symposium on this activity in early July, which is aimed to explore the basics and difficulties for commencing mathematical modeling education and instruction in various grades, so as to decipher the code for mathematical modeling education for all students.
5 Important Note:
The Committee also advises strongly to the teams participating in the SJMMA 2022 that, in response to the risk of Covid-19 epidemic and the impact of public health condition, the teachers and students of the participating teams should take safety and health as the first priority, and avoid risky transportation and gathering, and when the social environment not resuming to normal, to complete the modeling task through the online collaboration. According to the development of the Covid-19 epidemic situation, the on-site poster display and Oral presentation activities may take the online form.
